Our Vision: Viles Arboretum strives to be an exceptional natural environment in Maine's Capital city - a community space featuring diverse habitats which provide opportunities for recreation, exploring, and learning about nature.

Viles Arboretum seeks an energetic and motivated individual to serve as the full time Summer Camp-Coordinator from July 5th through August 16th, 2023.

Position Details: 45 hours per week, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday – Friday/$800 per week.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Planning, preparing and leading campers through a variety of activities rooted in science, agriculture, arts and crafts, culinary arts, and nature exploration.
  • Providing guidance, schedules and tasks for camp staff throughout the day.
  • Maintaining a safe learning environment, managing medical needs, nutritional needs, and other health needs of campers and staff.
  • Communicating with campers and families and staff in a way that is professional, kind, and considerate.
  • Supervising and monitoring campers as they participate in camp activities throughout the day, ensuring they are safe and kind.
  • Stewarding and maintaining the lands utilized for camp with campers and staff, with a respect for land, resources, and materials being a value of the camp.

Job Qualifications:

  • Experience in horticulture, botany, forestry, ecology, landscaping, agriculture, recreation, or related fields and demonstrated relevant work experience in similar or related areas.
  • Strong interest in conservation, ecological management, plants and their proper culture and care.
  • Strong communication, planning, organizational, and computer skills.
  • Experience working with children in educational settings.
  • Flexibility and an attitude or support and patience, along with a strong sense of humor.
  • Ability to manage and guide group activity and engagement while maintaining a supportive and welcoming environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
