Re-visiting the Larch Collection

The Larch Collection, also known as Alfred's Half Acre, was established as a memorial planting in 1991 by Elise Viles. Larch trees are unique as they are classified as deciduous conifers, meaning they have needles that drop every fall.

Revisiting the larch collectionFour different varieties of larch are planted in the Larch Collection; Maine native tamarack, European larch, Japanese larch and hybrid "Dunkeld" larch. This comprehensive representation of larch varieties from across the world has attracted the attention of researchers interested in the value of using exotic or hybrid larch as a forest crop. Wood from larch is gaining traction in the lumber industry, as the trees grow rapidly and are consistently straight. This stand is attractive for research as it is a good demonstration of the different growth rates of each of the larch varieties, allowing foresters to make educated decisions about the best variety to plant as a harvestable crop.
